Bicycle Safety and ICE Made Simple!
ICE4SAFETYWEB/ICEBikePicsCompiled608.JPGICE4SAFETY has blogged about using ICE on your bicycle before, but let's take this moment to elaborate some more and keep it short...

The picture here depicts an ICE Sticker on your bike helmet - something you should be wearing when riding a bicycle, on or off-road.

OK, this tells any first responder or good Samaritan that there is emergency information on the scene.

There are several places to put your information as the other pictures show. If you carry a tool bag, cargo bag or panniers you can place an ICE Card under the map pouch or on the side of the bag using a mail pouch...it will keep the card dry. you can also laminate the card with a DIY kit from 3M (found cheap at WalMart and Drug Stores etc)

Good idea to place your ICE Sticker on the bike frame in plain sight - preferably not hidden behind attachments or water bottles. This is a good idea anytime you ride, whether you are taking a long camping trip, training or sight seeing.  It doesn't matter if you are close to home of far away - outfit your bike or yourself at all times when riding.  Common sense.

It is hard to miss these ICE Cards...and that's the point!  Inexpensive yet effective.  The Accident blog below demonstrates the need to do this and can serve as a lesson to us all in many respects.....sadly.

We have some motorcycle groups (American Dresser in California for one) that use ICE Stickers and Cards when they ride...good idea!

Tragedy Illustrates Need for Safety Awareness...and ICE
ICE4SAFETYWEB/BicyclistWithoutIDAccident62108.JPG
Syracuse.com  6-21-08
Painful as it is, learning from tragedy is important...and necessary.

Using ICE may not have changed the outcome of the accident in this particular fatal crash between a motorcycle and a bicycle...but having ICE info on hand would certainly have made identification and notification of relatives more immediate.

ICE certainly would seem like a logical addition to your riding gear - bicycle and motorcycle alike.

ICE Stickers can easily be affixed to any bicycle and ICE Cards can be easily laminated or stuck on/in bike bags/bike helmet or cell phone.....or even a water bottle.

If you do nothing else, at least put your name on your helmet or bike.  You can learn to DIY here on this website.

The challenge is to now DO something to prevent reoccurrence!  A similar event happened in the Albany area last year...the only way authorities identified the woman victim was to place a police sketch of her in the hospital on television news to help ID her.  We blogged that here before.

Experienced bikers we spoke to said they NEVER - EVER wear Radios or I-Pods that restrict their ability to hear vehicles approaching while biking on roads.

So, if you or your children plan on doing this while riding on a public highway, you are only asking for trouble.

V&T Law prohibits the use of phones and audio devices that require headphones or earplugs for this same reason. Don't do it!

Another ICE Program Aid for Police-Fire-EMS
ICE4SAFETYWEB/PublicSafetyNoticePosterPic.JPGWell let's be honest....there are still a number of people not aware of the concept of ICE...oddly enough, some are in the Public Safety sector too.

Don't let that stop you from rolling out ICE in your community or organization.....you can improve awareness by sending a letter or simply use the Public Safety Notice Tool Box Talk developed here at ICE4SAFETY to alert public safety officials about ICE.

Never take (your) safety for granted....

People Inc Recognizes June Safety Month With ICE !
ICE4SAFETYWEB/PeopleIncLogo.JPGThe fine folks at People Inc in Williamsville, NY (Buffalo area of WNY) decided to do what they do best and that is to serve the needs of fellow human beings.  They also recognized an opportunity to ensure that their own employees and their families were taken care of as well.  What better time than National Safety Month to kick off an organization-wide safety initiative!

The Safety and Risk Manager at People Inc contacted ICE4SAFETY about rolling out a safety program using ICE starting with employees on a modest scale to start and then monitor the response.

That was one week ago.  ICE4SAFETY coordinated this effort with the organization's Workers Compensation Claims Management Team at USA-TPA who agreed to sponsor designingand printing the first batch of custom ICE Cards and ICE Stickers.  Since all the templates are online, this took merely a few minutes.

Well, once the word got out about the new safety program,  the ICE materials evaporated in very short order prompting an urgent call for resupply!  Each day the result was the same - everything gone!  Talk about response...these folks sure know a good thing when they see it!  As of this writing I believe they are into the third call for ICE Stickers alone!

People Inc, with 2500 employees, is the leading non-profit human services agency in Western New York serving the needs of over 10,000 individuals in a variety of ways through community outreach, health care, recreation, senior programs, residential services and assisting those with disabilities live healthy and productive lives.  People Inc started out modestly in 1970 and has since become an important and integral part of many communities in the Western New York area.

Having met the safety committee, ICE4SAFETY can tell you first hand these people are very safety savvy and certainly need to be.   The plans are to further integrate the concept of preparedness in the organization's safety program using ICE as a component part of Emergency Action Plans.  This will help promote an even higher level of safety for employees and consumers.

People has sent word to local Public Safety officials about their program to improve awareness and response by EMS/FIRE/POLICE to the program using a Public Safety Tool Box Talk!

A success in just three days....with a little help from their friends at USA-TPA...!

So, if you are a human service agency - or your company works with one, consider how well ICE is working for People Inc and places like Palm Beach County Florida.....and then give it a try yourselves!

To learn more about People Inc,  visit www.people-inc.org    We will keep you advised about the progress of this safety initiative!

Helmet Safety Tags - ICE Keeps It Simple and Cost Effective!
ICE4SAFETYWEB/TBTHelmetTagsEngPic.JPG
Once again, ICE4SAFETY has managed to come up with a simple and straighforward solution to getting workers to use ICE.

No need to spend $5-10 for each worker to outfit their helmets with ICE Cards and Stickers.  We calculated the cost at 25 Cents Each!

To make it even simpler ICE4SAFETY has created a pictorial tool box talk to demonstrate how to complete the process in six steps.

We used durable and flexible business card sized packing protectors that are removeable and reuseable as well.

Here's another tip....you can use these inside your vehicle glove box, bicycle cargo bag or travel luggage as well!

If your company or community wants to use this approach...set aside $25 for 1000 of these pouches.

C'mon, does it get any easier than this?
