SUNY UPSTATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY - UPSTATE EMERGENCY MEDICINE
The Emergency Medicine Department at Upstate Hospital ( A teaching hospital) has recognized for the second
year in a row that using ICE can be a valuable tool in your survival. They have their poster and brochures prominently
displaying that fact at the 2008 New York State Fair. The Fair is in progress as we blog this! Stop
by the Health Exhibit Building just inside the main gate and visit the SUNY Hospital Information Booth staffed by
medical professionals. Can you get a better endorsement than that to use ICE? Emergency

Pay Attention To Storm Warnings
Tropical Storm Kay - Some folks decided to stay put, others on a visit to the area smartly decided to remove themselves from
the danger of the "tropical storm".
Western and Central Florida have received a great deal
of wind, rain and flooding - something residents of this area are familiar with.
A
key learning from this event is that the Florida authorities have their evacuation and preparedness act together and
they issue warnings consistent with the recognized threat.
Listen to them. If they say you may need to get
out - yes, often a HUGE inconvenience - then be ready to make the decision in time to avoid what you see here.
Then again, maybe everyone was prepared and they all decided at the same time to move to safety.
There are not a lot of ways to leave the Florida Keys - that would be something to consider when you are developing your
personal evacuation plan.
Key Rules to Remember in These Situations:
Safety is your responsibility - you can't delegate it. You have to accept the liability for your
own safety (extreme sports people take note) You need to be informed - there is no substitute for knowledge. You can't prepare for everything (you'll go nuts - but preparing for likely events is key). Technology
is not a replacement for knowledge. THE most important first step in survival is recognizing something
can happen to you at any time. You may never know how the day will end. Adjust your mindset accordingly.
Your survival will depend on your determination to succeed, the decisions you make and the
focus or "situational awareness" you are able to maintain.
